GunShroom

The Fungi folk have had enough of hipster 'Foragers' coming to their homelands and taking away their sisters and cousins away to eat them.

No More!!

The time has come to pick up your trusty mushroom gun and fight back.

Inspired by Nex Machina / Nuclear Throne etc. Wanted to take the jam as opportunity to practice 3d modelling and scene visual skills, so any feedback on that aspect is most welcome, feel free to be brutally honest. :)

Random infinite levels - play for high scores :)

Clear All the enemies on each floor to unlock the portal to the next level.

Controls

Supports Mouse/Keyboard or Gamepad style input.

Controls - WASD or arrows to move, mouse to aim, left click to shoot, right click to dash.

Gamepad - Left Stick to Move, Right Stick to Aim, Right Trigger to Shoot, Left Trigger to Dash

All Art/Music/Sfx/Code (apart from some proc gen code ripped from an earlier project) made by me in a little over 72 hours.

Font - Thickhead by Scotty Ulrich

Very good gameplay, but spawning in a map feels RNG-heavy. I got overrun by the boss and a lot of enemies at once, and I rarely have to explore the playfield as most enemies trigger instantly. I have a very wide monitor; does the enemy AI react to the player when visible on the screen maybe?

@Synchronleuchter thanks for playing. The AI triggers when it has line of sight no matter the range, which is an odd choice now I think of it. So sometimes they come charging in from the otherside of the map with no warning, which is sort of funny but also maybe annoying. The spawn in position is very RNG heavy I should probably update the distrbution to spawn you in a safe spot one way or another. At least you get a little pause to plan your first move instead of being insta-swarmed as it was at some point :) .

Interesting game, I thought the base mechanics and level generation were nice but I think it could have done with some more content (maybe I didn't get far enough?). Also I felt that level spawns were a bit unfair, I always started a level getting overrun with enemies. Nice job though.

This was a fun little twin stick shooter! Not sure if it was intentional, but the mushroom character's animation looked like he was jamming to the soundtrack, which was delightful :D

This is a nice entry. You payed a lot of attention to details, like the shroom tilting his head, the nice bloom effect and the awesome level transtion. I also enjoyed that the big shroom gun shoots some small shrooms. :D

Some grace time would have been nice when spawning, because I often spawned directly next to an enemy and could not react fast enough.
The different enemy types are well chosen and the enemy speed made me feel just right on the edge.

The music is groovy and nice and fits the game quite well. The sound effects are well chosen and have a good volume.

Over all a very solid entry!

Solid little game! I agree that the shroom tilting its head is a nice touch!
I think you could have run with the theme a bit more, as the game would have worked the same if you switched the mushroom character for a human one.
I quite like the graphics and low poly style. Good job!

Heya!

Your game was the first I played in my AlakaGameJam Marathon. :D
It took me a little by surprise, that the enemies attack so quickly.
But I really liked the artstyle.

Here is the link to the video with the timestamp where your game starts, in case you would like to see it. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1416408407?t=0h7m29s

OK, so this is pretty impressive for a single developer, even if you took an extra 24 hours! I'm seeing good looking models, animations, particle effects, procgen levels, and hearing a self-consistent repertoire of sound effects and music. The game's difficulty seems well balanced to me; that is, I only made it to level 3, but it always felt like dying was due to my own lack of skills, and that I could do better.

Darn, these mushroom pickers must be hungry. I liked it! As others have mentioned the rng spawning is hit and miss. I wish also that there was some indicator of being hit, or the health more prominent.

Other than that, solid fun.
