This game was made for the AlakaJam 2022. You are a snail, venturing through the depths of a hollow tree trunk. Dangerous red mushrooms block your way, and green mushrooms can be collected at your peril.
Hey thanks for making that! I really liked the art style, especially that 2.5D feel and the nice particle and light effects. I have a couple of suggestions:
It's a shame that it became difficult so fast, because I would have enjoyed playing it a bit more, and discovering new mechanics in every level. I especially liked the way new things were introduced (Red = bad) :D
I think the second level isn't all too hard once you get a hang of the rhythm you need to tap Space in to float in mid-air. For a jam game, I wouldn't expect the level design to gradually teach me how to do that, but in a production release I'd expect to be eased into this technique.
However, I think there are ususally two pain points when a situation in a game frustrates you: how much you feel responsible for the failure and how long it takes to retry. I think if restarting the level were quicker and the last checkpoint before that challenge a little closer, many players would try harder at beating this level.
Moreover, what exactly did the green mushroom do? I only understood it is "good".
All that being said, I liked the game enough to power through! Thank you! 😁
I really like how the art style, the particle effects, lighting, stretch and squash animations, animations on the background text, and parallax come together.
But I feel like the game is too short with only a very easy first level and a very difficult second level (it took me some time to understand you could change gravity in mid air, and some more time to actually complete the level). I would have liked at least one or two levels in between with a moderate difficulty.
Also it is weird that there is only one green mushroom in the game, the maximum score you can get is 1. Although I understand that with some more time you could have added levels, with green mushrooms in different places etc.
arghh yeah I couldn't get past the beginnign of the 2nd level, couldn't master the mid air flight even after repeated attempts. Shame because the art style was charming enough, I would have happily played through some levels to develop my skills if it had been more forgiving. I agree with @Synchronleuchter that if you could restart faster to get to the pain point when you die it would also really help the player stay engaged and want to try more.
Heya, I played your game in my stream last saturday
and… i have to admit i really suck at this game. I could not make it past the tutorial and always died right after the green mushroom… and lost patience rather quickly…
If you like to see my miserable attempt to play your game, you can see the sad result here:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1416408407?t=0h58m49s I copied the timestamp where your game starts. :)
Boy, that escalated quickly! The first level was pretty easy. Not too easy for the first level. The second level was CRAZY HARD! :D
I think you could have maybe switched the second and third level around.
The graphics were great. I liked the animated help texts.
The mechanics were nice. I wish there was a couple of easier levels in between so it would have a bit more content. But it was a good one for the first alakajam entry. Hope to see you participate again!
That is one FAST snail! I like the simple controls and moody environment. Sad to say, I could not get past the place where there are rows of red mushrooms on the top and bottom (just after the first green mushroom). I thought I could drop into a space between the mushrooms, then jump back to the other side, but it was impossible. Maybe other folks here who are more dexterous than I will have better luck. Regardless, I think this game can be improved by reducing the number of red mushrooms and reducing the speed of the snail (or giving the player control over the speed).
