Alchemy Fumes

Alchemist wakes up after knocking himself out and his valuables has been stolen!

"Plot"

Alchemist wakes up after knocking himself out and his valuables has been stolen! He can't continue his world domination without the philosopher's stone. Find all the books of elements and use them to reach the ultimate goal!

Controls

Move the alchemist with either arrows or I, J, K and L. Once you learn elemental spells, you can select them with A, S, D and F. After that you have to invoke a spell using space.

To get you started, strong gust of wind moves barrels.

Tools

I used Unity as my game engine. Graphics were created with amazing Pro Motion NG. Tiled was used to create tilemaps.

I was not able to finish the entry completely. There's no plot of any kind in the game itself and the game doesn't end when you reach the goal. When you manage to pick up the philosopher's stone, you finished the game.

I liked the retro estetics that looks a lot like ZX Spectrum.
I found a little anoying that we always get back to the middle of the town when going out of the houses.
The game play is nice:)

I liked the mechanics of combining the speels for different effects to solve the puzzles. Some things were a bit buggy, like restarting in the centre of teh town and if you hold down space and S you can push the barrels through each other, which makes the puzzles easier. Anyway played till the end so was still having enough fun

Hey there, I don't have understand all the combinations yet but I really like thoses mechanism of spell combining, some weird glitches are appening when I pull the barrel, and the fact you are teleported to the centre all the time make the adventure confusing some times, also when you exit a room that you have claimed, when you enter again, all the "loots" and stuff are there again ! (I want your system in my house xD).
In conclusion, I liked the game mechanism but some weird things are appening x)
Well done for the jam :)

Liked the old school puzzle element of the game. Took a while to work out how to use abilities. If you had used a "on key down" it would have made selecting abilities easier, as if you hold the key down it keeps toggling it on and off.

An average puzzle in all aspects. The graphics are functional. Combing Fire, Wind, Water and Earth to solve problems is thematically an ok fit yet not exactly original.

The only offender, stooping below average, is the interactivity itself. There are user interface issues and other bugs.

  1. Pressing and holding a spell key should not cycle the spell on and off. It is annoying having to quickly press a key to keep the spell active.
  2. Transitioning between areas. When going indoors the character position is correctly set next to the door, but if you continue pressing the up key the character moves up and, in specific houses, immediately leaves. The character position always resets back to the center of the town when coming back outside. Getting indoors requires very quickly pressing the up key, which is still annoying.
  3. All items reset when going back into a house. Sure, it is required in the case of messing up a level, but the spellbooks should not respawn at least.
  4. Small, mostly graphics, bugs with the element interactions. The holes are filled when throwing a rock in, except in the last house where they just dissappear. The last cell door also looks open when it really isn't, if you merely walk over the trigger.
  5. You cannot burn the cat!

I do like the plague doctor alchemist with his moral flexibility, burning and blowing up just about everything (except the cat…)

Nice oldschool Win16-era graphics. Pity there's no sound. Usability issue: when you leave a room to go back to the main area, you're always dropped in the middle, which makes it hard to remember where you just came from. There are some annoying bugs with clipping and the S spell pushing the wrong barrel sometimes.

Gameplay-wise, there could be more to it. Some puzzles seem like they could be solved with fire (burn all the barrels) but can't. Similarly, D seems to bridge gaps, so why can't I use it in the room with the holes? And I couldn't figure out how to get to the F spell… I would think I need water from the well, but no idea how to get it.

Neat game! I included it in my Alakajam #1 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/YUCYcrngipc
