Fungi vs. Bugs

A Plant vs. Zombies type of game where you plant mushrooms to fight agains fungivores (termite, snails,...)

The game plays like Plants vs. Zombies. There's an infinite wave of insects coming, and you must place mushrooms to protect… well… something. The game is pretty slow, but you can enjoy an incredible song on loop. If three enemies pass the red line it's game over.

I made this game on a rush, alone, I did a lot of messy code, it's probably not very playable but anyway enjoy. Please be honest in your review or comment.

Yes! Glad to know there's another Plants vs Zombies inspired game in this jam. Really love the fact that you have many choices for the fungi. The music is nice as well. Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • I think it would be great if you adjust the stats of the fungi and enemies. The damage should be higher and the enemies should run faster to make the game more exciting. It will require in-depth balancing for sure.
  • I think you need to adjust the text on each fungus card. The text are too small and a bit pixelated. I wasn't really able to read each of their description so I just planted them randomly at first.
  • It would be cool to have enemies spawn as 1 huge wave in certain time intervals. Maybe in every 4 minutes a huge wave appears? That would keep the players alert while playing.

Overall, this game has really great potential. Good work!

@netervati Thanks you so much for your review! That's so fun that we had the same inspiration for the jam. I totally agree with your suggestions and that's something I will maybe work after the ratings process is done.

Great Entry! When I read Plants vs Zombies I was immediately hyped. Such a great game and for a weekend you did a great adaptation of that.

The gameplay mechanics and the ui work great! The sounds are well chosen and the pixel art is nicely done. I was only missing some music.

The beginning is quite challenging, but after you have a stable inflow of water droplets, it was almost too easy. I played until my board was full and I could not place any more fungi. I then waited until I had 10000 droplets to see if something else would happen. It might be a good idea if you scale the enemies or make of of them spwan in the later phases of the game or the wave suggestion mentioned by netervati in the post above.

All in all: great entry!

Very nice! I understood the game mechanics really quickly and it suddenly felt really fun ! Although the music part is a bit too repetitive, the graphics are simple yet nice, the sound effects do the job and the gameplay is really funny. A very nice take on the "Plant vs Zombies" type of game!

Great job :)

Cool game and congrats on finishing it!
I have a couple of suggestions:

  • You have a small clash of styles here, with pixel art and regular "hires" images. It is ok to have both, as long as there is a clear distinction between where pixel art is used, and where hires art is used. I think the one part where that distinction is not there, is the droplets. They certainly live in the "game world", which has pixel graphics. The other hires elements can be viewed as UI, so it's fine for them to look different.
  • The bubble shrooms don't seem to work (or I didn't know how to get them to work). Also, their text says something about Level 1 / Level 2, which made me try to find out how to upgrade shrooms for a bit :D
  • As others have mentioned, the difficulty scaling needs some work. I liked the beginning, as like in PvZ, you had to manage limited resources, wanting to build the generators and having to build towers to shoot at the incoming enemies. But at some point, the challenge just went away.

Oh yes, and I really liked the little flavor text for each shroom :)
Hope that is some useful feedback and thanks for creating this game!

@Cuddl3s Thanks a lot for your review! Sorry if there was a bug with the bubbleshrooms, I will try to fix them. As for the "clash of style", I tried to do the best I can to make pixel art.
There's a big problem of balencing and if I come back to this project, I will make sure to make it better.

Nice game, and pretty good execution given the time limit. My small issue is just the difficulty curve. It's difficult at the beginning, but you can very quickly fill the board with fungi and the bugs dont spawn fast enough to make it hard, so you can eventually just sit back and it seems the game will just run infinitely. Balancing is always hard with jam games though, and its still a good game, nice job!

It was a cool idea to use the theme for a Plants vs. Zombies clone! Nice work for making a complete one in a week-end :)

The game is mostly functional, unfortunately it crashed for me on my three attempts to play the game, around five couple minutes into it every time. I suspect it has to do with the spawning of the second enemy.

The early game is a bit slow, but overall it seemed fun and reasonaby balanced. Strategy-wise I suspect the early game is mostly about spamming drop producers + mines, maybe placing a shooter or two depending on where the enemies spawn. Sadly I never got not much further.

Art-wise the mushrooms and enemies were cute, the rest of the art a bit uneven but I didn't mind much. The audio was funny, although I did have to mute the 5 second music loop after a while haha

Too bad I couldn't experience the whole game as it seemed pretty interesting to explore the different shroom types and their tactics.

Art looks nice, but the background pops up more than the mushrooms. Makes it a bit hard to look at. If you make the background less saturated or darker, it might help a lot. Also, I don't like that some gameplay elements are pixel art and some are not. It's fine for the cards and UI in general. Music is bearable but the sound effects are actually really nice.

The crashing wan mentioned happened to me too. I think it's related to clicking a card when it's still on cooldown. I managed to avoid it after that and filled the whole board. Didn't seem to get any harder after that :D

Good stuff. Hope to see you next jam!
