Underpowered

A top down maze game were you the player harness electricity to grow the size of your Alien and fight enemies.

You take the role of an alien cast out from their tribe for being too weak.
Invade a human spaceship and sap their power to increase your strength. Evolve to new forms and defeat any enemies you come across.

Underpowered is a top-down maze puzzle game in a sci-fi setting.

Created by Stuart and Ryan this was our first ever game jam and we are extremely please with the result. Was a fantastic learning experience and we hope to compete again in the future.
We would've liked more time to create more levels and more interesting/complex levels but we are pleased to have produced a working prototype for the game in the time.

Feedback is very welcome, let us know what you think!

Very interesting game. I can see potential in the mechanics, but I would have like a bit more of a challenge in a puzzle based game, but I understand that it isn't complete. Graphics were very nice and had a constant theme. Only issue I would say this has is the potential use of sounds not created by your team.

Fun little puzzle/maze game. Only issue I had was on the 3rd level sometimes it glitched out and I was moving outside of the squares, other than that it was a fun little game, nice work!

I want more levels! What a great puzzle game, I really enjoyed it. The graphics are super cute and the screaming sound made me laugh.

Honestly I was bit bummed because it was so short, I really wanted more levels :D That's a mark of good game right there!

If you polish the graphics and sounds, add different kind of dangers and add lots of levels, this would make a great puzzle game.

Good work!!

Interesting mechanics, and nice art. Really nice job. It'd be cool to see more levels in the future.
The sound whenever you kill a guy is funny. Kinda reminds me of the wilhelm scream. x)

Fun idea, I enjoyed finding the solutions to the puzzles. Though I did experience a weird bug when I tried to kill the second guy with the gun after killing the guy that blocks the button. My screen bugged out and I had to restart the level because i died when i probably shouldn't have.

Quite a good idea, it's just a shame that you didn't have enough time to make more levels, it feels like this concept could have been expanded on a lot further. The graphics were pretty simple, but I quite liked the music and scream sound effect, did you record it yourself?

Cool game! Love the mechanic for a puzzle game. I would like it a lot more if I could see the whole map, so I cna plan tahead, it's a puzzle after all. Also, there seems to be some bugs where I can buffer an input and walk through walls. The art is not my cup of tea but it has character and is memorable.

Sad that you couldnt milk the mechanic more, it's very promising! Congrats on the game! I'm sure you could make a bigger more polished game out of this great simple puzzle mechanic.

Compelling backstory and setting, lacking in other aspects. Certainly a prototype in that sense.

The solutions to each level are so trivial that I'd be hard pressed to call this a puzzle in its current form. More mechanics are needed to form the focus of the project. Here are a few ideas:

  • The humans should see the alien and run away, shoot, or give chase. It is most odd that they simply stand there. Should be turn-based by the looks of it.
  • Voluntary shapeshifting. Energy is stored and can be used when needed. For instance, lure a human around a corner as a small alien, transform to a killer when they don't see you and they walk right into the trap!
  • Alarms! A panicked human can ring the alarm causing more soldiers to storm in. Hiding for a while might help, or going postal!

Yes, I'm trying to steer you away from a deductive logic challenge towards a decision making competition.

The visuals are ok, but suffer from inconcistencies. The pixelated font, multi-colored main character and simple background are at odds with each other. The assets also look like they were made with MS Paint. Not deducting points for that, mind you.

The music is nice, but it seems you didn't make it, so… no points there.

Functional project, good effort, more design needed.
