The grotesque voxel people are looking nervous pacing back and forth, they must be getting anxious for the start of the jam.
(Was just trying on options for getting animated characters out of magica voxel, I think the smooth rotations look better)
Yeah the blocky also one has a certain weird charm. It was fairly quick to do those animations, for the blocky animation i just export each of the magica frames as models and then cycle through them making only one active at a time. The smooth one i did by cutting up the model and exporting a bunch of objects then reassembling in unity and using unity's animation tools to add key frames for rotation. Took a little bit longer. At least for me both options are a lot quicker than trying to go through blender, but i'm pretty bad with blender. I haven't tried to do 3d for game jams before because I could easily spend 48 hours trying to create and rig one ugly model.
I actually like both… The smooth rotations look more Minecraft-like, while the fixed one feels more like authentic voxel blockiness.
If MagicaVoxel can export animations that easily to Unity that makes it a tempting choice!
