My second project as an independent interactive-digital-media developer is out and has been for a week.
Haven't been able to take part in Kajams due to work, work, work. The Artificial Intelligence one would have been fun, but alas. At least I had time to play through the entries now.
Looking forward to the 3rd Alakajam! Not skipping it for any reason.
@Wan
Thanks for playing and the words!
I recorded and implemented the voiceovers in a single day! Just something I wanted to try out, never having done any voice acting before. Useful practice for one of my planned future projects with an emphasis on text and voices rather than graphics. Will need to allocate many more days to audio to get it right.
The level descriptions for the first 10 levels are quite utilitarian indeed, it seems. There is more flavour in the later ones, talking about individual buildings and their histories. Hmm, not the best demonstration of the writing then.
Designing a user interface for a completely reversible puzzle is certainly easier due to more references to draw from. Icons for each resource might have improved the mostly text based panels even more, but I didn't have time or, quite frankly, motivation to draw 20 odd images. The 3D models were higher up on the priority list, happy to hear they are good enough!
5$ turns neatly into 3.75$, 2.5$ and 1.25$ when discounted at the usual intervals. Will keep the possibility in mind as well as the potential mobile version, although both will have to wait for now.
New projects ahoy!
I almost completed the demo, reaching A10 without being able to beat it (…yet. thanks for the save system :D). This is a quite interesting and enjoyable puzzle game, that despite accessible rules turns out quite complex!
Presentation-wise I found the game much easier to pick up than Save the Civies, with a clean and intuitive UI that just works. I also liked the 3D models for the buildings, which are easy to recognize and distinguish. So really, good job, I really don't have much to say graphics-wise! Same for the music and SFX, the selection of tracks fits the genre well. My only mixed impressions are for the addition of voice-overs: they made me expect some kind of background story and/or flavor text, especially with the strangely affected & low-pitch voice, but instead they just provide down to earth explainations of the upcoming levels so I felt there was a kind of missed opportunity here. Though maybe an intrigue emerges later in the levels?
The gameplay itself is quite interesting, and while I usually don't have too much patience for this kind of "fit everything together in the right combination" puzzles, in this particular case it remained enjoyable throughout the demo. The cool construction theme setting certainly helped. The difficulty progression was mostly okay, and I started to learn by the end some general tactics (eg. generators are a good way to split family apartments). Funnily I had a two-step approach to the final levels, ie. I started by just looking for the right combination of elements (especially the proportion of each type of housing), only to try and get the disposition right in a second step.
Regarding pricing, as a player I think this could have been a tempting $2, maybe $3 purchase. Especially if there was a mobile version of it!
